Nomination launches first Dominican to the United States Congress

NEW YORK (UN) - Several organizations in New York are preparing to launch their nominations to the Congress of the United States. The Dominican community has chosen to send evangelist, Félix Jerez.

The Washington Heights Democratic Club, The Confederation of Progressive Women and the Dominican American National Union are sponsoring the recent proposal.

Aside from the aforementioned, there are 20 other groups that intend on supporting the young political leader to become the first Dominican in the House of Representatives.

Jerez, a former City Council candidate for District 7 is considering the nomination along with his team of advisers that includes Frank Spies, Billy Berroa Jr, Francesca Castellanos and Dr. Nelson Denis, who is running for State Assembly in District 72.

"Jerez is the ideal candidate to become the first Dominican congressman in the United States," said Frank Spies.

"I've known him for over 20 years, he is dynamic, professional, and above all a man of great fidelity, with the support of all his fellow Dominicans in New York".

The seat Félix Jerez is running for is that of Congressional District 15, is currently occupied by Charles Rangel, where 47 percent of voters are Dominican.

Congressional District 15 is comprised of Upper Manhattan, Manhattan Valley, West Harlem, Riverdale, Marble Hill, Riker’s Island, and an unpopulated section of northwestern Queens.

In the last elections for City Council, voter’s who preferred the Democratic Party support the African American candidate Robert Jackson removed Jerez from the ballot box.

As a native of Cotuí, Dominican Republic, Jerez migrated to New York in the 80s, and since then has been a member of the Democratic Party.

Jerez has been a reporter for TV-13, World Vision, Channel 9, "Super Review", creator of Latin Awards and founder of the weekly newspaper El Nuevo Hudson, El Globo, The Latin Post, Ultima Nota, and the cultural event "Viva La Patria”.

Last year he obtained a technical degree in theology from Heavenly Vision Institute of New York.
